The lifespan of a dishwasher is highly dependent on whether it is maintained properly. The most important way to care for your dishwasher is to rinse your dishes off in the sink, before loading them into the dishwasher. This will reduce the likelihood of food or debris causing a blockage, or possibly damaging a pump impeller.
Dishwasher are equipped with screens, filters and even choppers, however they should be considered a safeguard against accidental food debris. The more food that goes into a dishwasher, the more maintenance it is ultimately going to need. Food will eventually clog filters and screens, reducing the velocity of water spraying your dishes.
It also important to keep your dishwasher clean in other ways as well. It is very important to run dishwasher cleaner through your dishwasher, to help remove calcium or lime. This will build up on everything inside the dishwasher. Calcium or Lime will coat the internal walls and racks. It will also line the inside of many parts you cannot see, such as sumps and pumps. How frequently you run cleaner through your dishwasher should depend on the hardness of your water supply.
