Will Not Heat
The most common failure that will lead to a microwave not heating is a malfunctioning magnetron tube. The magnetron tube creates microwaves, which is what heats the food. When the magnetron tube fails, it will often produce a loud buzzing or humming sound when running.
Counts Down But Not Running
In most cases, this issue will be associated with a problematic door switch. Microwaves have a number of small micro switches to verify that the door is open or closed. These switches can fail often, and for a variety of reasons. When these switches fail, the microwave timer will often count down on the display, however nothing else can be heard running.
Dim Display
A dim display is a very common with any appliance. This typically means that the capacitors are failing on the control circuit board. The best solution for this problem is to replace the control board entirely.
No Power
If a microwave has no lights and no display, it is best to first make sure the power supply is ok by plugging the unit into another outlet. If the problem is confirmed to be in the microwave, it is likely the microwave has a blown fuse. Microwaves are equipped with many different types of safety fuses and thermostats. Some will cut off the power to the unit, when exposed to high temperatures. Some will disable power when there is an over draw of electrical current.
