Not Heating to the Correct Temperature
When diagnosing an oven, it is important to first identify which burners or elements are heating and which ones are not. When neither the bake or broil heat, a fuse or thermostat often has tripped. Many ovens are designed with fuses and safety thermostats to prevent the oven from overheating. If an over-temperature condition occurs, all heat sources will be disabled until fuse or thermostat is manually replaced or reset. Often an oven will heat, but not to the correct temperature. This will most likely be a failure in a thermostat, sensor, or control board. These are controlling the cycling of the heat source, off and on, to maintain the desired temperature.
Calibrate Oven Temperature
There are hundreds of different oven models, with various different calibration methods. The directions to calibrate your oven model can sometimes be found in user manual, which is given at the time of purchase. However, calibrating your oven is rarely the solution for a temperature issue. There is usually a malfunctioning sensor or control, causing the temperature fluctuations, and will continue to get worse.
Oven Noises
Most ovens only have a handful of moving parts, so it’s usually fairly easy to pinpoint an oven noise. It’s very common to hear a popping or a metallic cracking sound, while the unit is initially preheating, which is perfectly normal. However, it’s also common for cooling fans to make noises when they starting to fail. If the fan is not pushing sufficient air to cool down the unit than it could overheat. Fan noises should be addressed immediately, as they can put you at risk for house fire.
